Give me time to know what you want of me. I don’t understand your words.

Don’t be angry with me when I do not understand. I have only you to expain things to me.

Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice.

Be aware that however you treat me I will not forget it.

Keep me safe from harm, because I am no longer wild and able to know my enemies.

Before you hit me, remember that I have teeth that could crush the bones in your hand and hooves that could kill you. But, I choose not to use them.

Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if I am well or if something my be bothering me.

My life is likely to last 20 to 30 years. Please make sure that I am taken care of because I cannot care for myself.

Go with me on difficult journeys. Don’t say “I can’t stand to watch it”, or “let it happen in my absence.” Everything is easier for me if you there. Place your trust in me and I will trust you.

She is my other eyes that can see above the clouds; my other ears that hear above the winds.

She has told me more than a thousand times over that I am her reason for being– by the way she rests against my leg, by the way she thumps her tail at my smallest smile– by the way she shows her hurt when I leave without taking to her. (I think it makes her sick with worry when she is not along to care for me ) .

When I am wrong, she is delighted to forgive.

When I am angry, she clowns to make me smile.

When I am happy, she is joy unbounded.

When I am a fool, she ignores it.

When I succeed, she brags.

Without her, I am only another person.

With her, I am all powerful.

She has taught me the meaning of devotion is loyalty itself.

With her, I know the secret comfort and a private peace.

She has brought me understanding where before I was ignorant.

Her head on my knee can heal my human hurts.

Her presence by my side is protection against my fears of dark and unknown things.

She has promised to wait for me…whenever…wherever…in case I need her, and I expect I will, as I always have.

Who is she?– She’s just–MY DOG!

At the end of the stretch, gently replace your horse’s leg to it original position.

Use your entire body and bend your knees when lifting your horse’s leg. Please take the neccessary precautions to protect yourself from injury.

The more you understand yourself and honor your horse, the more you will enjoy each other.

ENERGY –Over riding physically will make a horse tense and shorten his stride. Relax and have a balanced ride.

COMMITMENT– Commitment to your horse assures that you will give your horse total attention, understanding, care and love. Your commitment to horsemanship will be meaningless unless it is accompanied by a commitment to your horse.

DISCIPLINE– You must discipline yourself before you can discipline your horse. Once your horse responds, immediately treat him; with love as though there had never been resistance.

PATIENCE- - Learn to do one thing at a time until it becomes second nature. Respond to mistakes or disobedience without irritation, frustration, or loss of temper. Be patient with yourself and your progress.

PRAISE– Praise your horse, yourself and others for a job well done. Praise removes the stress of uncertainty, promotes self-esteem.

FORGIVENESS– You must be able to forgive yourself and others for bad behavior, and then forget. Learn to live for today keeping in mind your future goal.

CONCENTRATION– Focus on your horse and what you are doing, this will make your actions quicker, stronger and more accurate.

FREEING YOUR MIND– When faced with important decisions, it is necessary to free your mind of clutter.

EMPATHY– Empathy allows you to put yourself into the mind of your horse so you can understand and accept their motivations, attitudes and actions. This also refers to other people.

ATTITUDE– Your attitude is your point of view toward yourself and your horse. Having a positive attitude towards life is a necessary step along your journey.

AWARENESS– Awareness takes you way beyond your riding ability. A great way to increase your focused awareness and learn a great deal about your horse is to learn to massage him. You learn where he likes to be ribbed.. This will gradually make you more aware of your horse.

BEING HUMBLE– Mentally you are superior to the horse, but that does not give you the right to dominate over him. Soften your control so you can allow the horse to be himself.

TRUST–When your horse trust you, he relaxes and accepts whatever you ask. He’ll relax with you and will do what he thinks you want even if you ask him incorrectly.

During the chaos of the 9/11 attacks, where almost 3,000 people died, nearly 100 loyal search and rescue dogs and their brave owners scoured Ground Zero for survivors.
Now, ten years on, just 12 of these heroic canines survive, and they have been commemorated in a touching series of portraits entitled ‘Retrieved’.
The dogs worked tirelessly to search for anyone trapped alive in the rubble, along with countless emergency service workers and members of the public.

Travelling across nine states in the U.S. from Texas to Maryland, Dutch photographer Charlotte Dumas, 34, captured the remaining dogs in their twilight years in their homes where they still live with their handlers, a full decade on from 9/11.
Their stories have now been compiled in a book, called Retrieved, which is published on Friday, the tenth anniversary of the attacks.
Noted for her touching portraits of animals, especially dogs, Charlotte wanted ‘Retrieved’ to mark not only the anniversary of the September 2001 attacks, but also as recognition for some of the first responders and their dogs.

‘I felt this was a turning point, especially for the dogs, who although are not forgotten, are not as prominent as the human stories involved,’ explained Charlotte, who splits her time between New York and Amsterdam.
‘They speak to us as a different species and animals are greatly important for our sense of empathy and to put things into perspective.’

Most of the search and rescue dogs are Labradors or Golden Retrievers and Charlotte feels that the title works across many aspects of the story.
‘I found the dogs, I retrieved them, they were there to retrieve the victims, it is nicely rounded,’ explained Charlotte whose work is being exhibited at the Julie Saul Gallery NYC opening on September 8, in time for the anniversary.
After working on a project about police canines and other working dogs, she was inspired to concentrate on the animals that played such a huge part in seeking survivors.
Contacting the NYPD, the New York Fire Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Charlotte discovered that out of the nearly 100 dogs among the first responders deployed by FEMA, there were in fact only 15 still alive last year.

‘They were there for the first few weeks, they were trained to find people alive, although that is ultimately not what happened,’ said Charlotte, who will hold a fundraiser for the First Responder Alliance at Clic Bookstore in New York on September 29.
‘I traveled across the United States to meet with the owners and portray the dogs. They are all retired and I spent time with each of their handlers learning about their experiences.
‘It was moving talking to Denise Corliss, who is the handler and owner of Bretagne, one of the Golden Retrievers.
‘She told me a touching story of one fireman who was there in the rubble, and how taken he was with Bretagne who comforted him as he sat down to catch his breath.

‘Years later at a Remembrance Ceremony, the same fireman recognised Bretagne and her handler and they had a touching reunion.
‘It developed that even though the dogs couldn’t find people still alive, they could provide comfort for the brave firemen and rescue workers of the emergency services.’
Wishing to tell the other side of heroism from 9/11, each of Charlotte’s encounters with dogs such as Gabriel and Orion and Scout stayed with her.
‘The dogs are now old and they will soon pass away. Even during the time it has taken since my first work on the ‘Retrieved’ portraits to now, three of the final 15 have died,’ said Charlotte.
‘These portraits are about how time passes, and how these dogs and their portraits are offering us a way to deal with the things that happened as well as relying on them for comfort.
